Meta Tags

Posted by Kanhaiya Prasad on Mar 1, 2010
    Hi
Why do i need META Tags, anyways, till the search engine is able to cache the contents of my page and throw it to the user the moment he searches for something.

How many META Tags can i have in my page.
What if I have a ASP.NET application with mastr page implementation. can i still put META Tages on the the inherited pages. If yes , then how

META Tags are used to provide extra description to a web page. The contents of the page are visible to the search engines, and they are even cached and searched within whenever it gets a hit. But the META tags stay as a separate field to represent an individual webpage. A webpage can be compared with a record database table which has the following columns: Title, Description, Keywords, Content. The Description and Keywords are given more priority while searching, than looking into the content.

Moreover, META tags do not only mean description or keywords, but it is a generic property element for a page. It has four attributes - name, scheme, content, http-equiv. For adding description and keywords to a webpage, the META elements are used as follows:

You can have any number of META elements in your page's
element, but it would be recommended if you have one for each function. The META element can be used for the following functions:

Description of the page.

Keywords

Language of the page content

Content-Type

Client-side redirection to another url after a specific duration

Search Engine robots control

Custom headers for pages

You can write your META elements in the
section of the ASP.NET MasterPage. In ASP.NET 2.0, a default ContentPlaceHolder by ID head will be created on the
section, in which you'd be able to add your META elements for your inherited pages.
